What is object storage?
Object storage is a model that keeps files in containers called 'buckets', addressed by unique keys instead of a folder hierarchy. Since capacity is not tied to a virtual disk, it grows practically without limits, and every object is reachable over HTTP from anywhere in the world. It is the modern standard for backups, media and big data.
What does S3-compatible mean?
Amazon S3's API has become the de facto standard of object storage. An 'S3-compatible' service speaks that API exactly: every tool written for S3 — the AWS CLI, SDKs, Veeam, rclone — can be used by changing only the endpoint address. You migrate without changing code or habits.
What is Ceph, and why do we use it?
Ceph is the world's most widely used open-source distributed storage system, proven in giant clusters from CERN to telecom operators. It distributes data across the cluster's servers in copies, repairs corrupted copies by itself, and scales without limit by adding nodes. There is no single disk, single server or single point of failure.
How is it different from a classic disk or FTP?
Disks and FTP are limited by one server's capacity and reliability; when they fill up, you have to move. In object storage, capacity is elastic, data is protected in three copies, and access is through a modern API. As your application scales, your storage layer stops being the bottleneck.
