.app domains explained

.app is a generic top-level domain for applications, operated by Google Registry. Registration does not publish an app in a store, develop software or provide hosting. Search your application’s name at DomainQ and register the address for its product page and support links.

Diagram of the name, extension and DNS hierarchy in yourbrand.app
In yourbrand.app, yourbrand is your chosen name and .app is the top-level domain. DNS hierarchy proceeds from the root (.) to the extension and the name. This is an illustrative address, not an availability result.

.app: Google Registry and HSTS

Manage DNS connections for your .app from DomainQ in your panel. HSTS requires browser connections to use HTTPS; arrange your site’s valid certificate and hosting separately with your chosen service.

Charleston Road Registry Inc.

It operates as Google Registry and is a Google subsidiary.

When to use .app

Mobile app websites

Publish features, support information and store links at one address. Keep download links current so users reach the correct version.

Browser-based products

A SaaS service or web application can use .app. Plan domains and subdomains for sign-in, help and marketing pages before launch.

Games and utility projects

Collect a game’s guides, release notes and support channels. The extension does not verify device or app-store compatibility.

Choosing a product name for .app

Compare .app and .com options at DomainQ so your web address matches the application name users see in the store.

Consistency with the store name

Different app-store and website names can send users to the wrong product. Check similar brands and application names.

.app or .dev

.app can identify the end-user product, while .dev can identify developer tools or documentation. Define their roles if using both.

One product or the company

A company with several applications can use a product-specific .app alongside its main .com. Track content and renewals for each address.

Register and manage .app at DomainQ

Confirm your product name and registration term in your DomainQ order. Manage its web connection with free Premium Anycast DNS, and arrange HTTPS-capable hosting and a valid certificate separately for launch.

Before registering at DomainQ

HTTPS for browsers

.app is on the HSTS preload list. Websites and redirect endpoints must serve HTTPS using a valid certificate.

Subdomains

If the application, help centre or API uses different subdomains, verify certificate coverage for each.

Premium-name cost

A premium .app can cost more beyond the initial purchase. Check its registration, renewal and transfer quotes after selecting the name.

Store publication and domain registration

Domain registration does not transfer a store account or application content. Update download links and support addresses when releases change.

Technical terms and transaction details

Does HSTS guarantee application security?

No. HSTS enforces HTTPS for web connections; application code, account permissions and data-handling security must be managed separately.

Questions about .app at DomainQ

From choosing .app to registration and renewal: answers about your DomainQ service and the extension’s requirements.

Must my application already be published to buy .app?

Google Registry offers .app as an open extension. Choosing a domain is separate from having an application published in a store.

Is .app only for mobile applications?

No. It can also be used for a web application, SaaS product, game or website presenting an app.

Does a .app domain require HTTPS?

Yes, a .app website needs HTTPS for browser access. HSTS preloading means HTTP-only serving is insufficient.

Does .app registration include SSL?

A domain alone does not provide a certificate. Check whether your hosting or selected package includes one and how it is configured.

What is the total cost of a cheap .app domain?

Add hosting, HTTPS and any email costs to registration and renewal. Premium names may carry an annual fee different from the standard rate.

Will .app improve my app-store ranking?

An extension does not guarantee app-store visibility or Google rankings. Product content, promotion and technical accessibility require separate work.

Can .app redirect to an app-store listing?

Yes. The redirecting .app address must itself support HTTPS because the visitor connects securely to it before being redirected.

Can the same .app serve web and email?

Yes. With the free Premium Anycast DNS included in .app registration at DomainQ, manage website and email records in one panel. Arrange the web and email services separately. HSTS concerns browser connections and does not create an email service.

Should I buy both .app and .com?

It is optional. One can represent the company and the other a product; choose a primary address if both serve the same content.

Can I transfer my existing .app domain to DomainQ?

Use our transfer service to move an existing .app domain to DomainQ, subject to domain transfer rules. Plan hosting, application and domain work separately while keeping DNS and the HTTPS certificate working. Our team can answer questions about transfer steps.
