.dev domains explained

.dev is a generic extension offered by Google Registry for developers and technology projects. Because it is on the HSTS preload list, a website serving only HTTP will not work with this address in normal browser use. Connect a .dev registered at DomainQ to your portfolio, product or technical documentation.

In yourbrand.dev, yourbrand is your chosen name and .dev is the top-level domain. DNS hierarchy proceeds from the root (.) to the extension and the name. This is an illustrative address, not an availability result.

.dev: Google Registry and HTTPS

Manage the domain and DNS connection for your .dev registration at DomainQ. The legal operator is Charleston Road Registry Inc. HSTS requires HTTPS for web publishing; hosting and a valid certificate must be arranged separately.

When to use .dev

Developer portfolios

Collect projects, articles and work samples under your own name. Even if you maintain a code-hosting profile, the domain can connect to different services.

Product documentation

Publish API documentation, getting-started guides and code examples. Plan versioning and access to older documentation independently of the domain name.

Developer tools and communities

Use it for a library, testing tool or technical community. Make download, installation and contribution paths easy to find.

The role of a .dev address in your project

Search your personal and product name options at DomainQ and decide which address will lead to your portfolio, product and documentation.

Personal name or product name

A personal name can suit freelance work, while a product name can identify a standalone tool. Plan domain ownership if the project may be transferred.

.dev compared with .app

.dev can describe developer-facing content, while .app can describe an end-user application. Both require HTTPS for browser access.

Local testing addresses

.dev is a real internet extension. Do not arbitrarily use someone’s registered .dev domain for an example intended only for your computer.

Register and manage .dev at DomainQ

Your .dev registration at DomainQ includes free Premium Anycast DNS. Check that your hosting supports custom domains and HTTPS; installing a valid TLS certificate is a separate step from domain registration.

Before registering at DomainQ

HTTPS and certificate

The certificate must cover the domain and any subdomains in use. After DNS setup, check certificate issuance and renewal.

An HTTP redirect is insufficient

An HSTS-aware browser starts with HTTPS. A .dev address that redirects elsewhere also needs a working HTTPS endpoint.

Premium renewal

A short or selected name may carry an annual premium. Confirm its renewal amount rather than relying only on the initial purchase price.

Account and service separation

Manage the name through the project’s account and distinguish the repository, cloud host and domain provider. A provider transfer does not move the application automatically.

How to register a domain with DomainQ

From choosing your name to managing DNS, keep your domain in one customer panel.

  1. Search for your name at DomainQ

Check your address for availability and compare alternative extension prices. Searching alone does not reserve the name.

  3. Connect with your included DNS

Manage web and email records with our included Premium Anycast DNS. If you are still building your site, try SiteQ free for 15 days; our team can help with setup questions.

Technical terms and transaction details

How do I prepare a certificate?

Follow your host’s custom-domain and HTTPS instructions. Free or paid certificates may be available; correct domain coverage and reliable renewal matter.

Questions about .dev at DomainQ

From choosing .dev to registration and renewal: answers about your DomainQ service and the extension’s requirements.

Do I need developer certification for .dev?

Google Registry offers .dev among its open generic extensions. Registration policies and the HTTPS requirement apply rather than professional certification.

Does .dev work without HTTPS?

A web page needs HTTPS in HSTS-aware browsers. Serving only HTTP is insufficient; configure a valid TLS certificate.

Does buying .dev include an SSL certificate?

The HSTS requirement does not supply a certificate. Check whether your host or package includes one and complete the separate setup.

Is .dev only for local testing?

No. It is a real, publicly registered extension. Using someone else’s registered name as a local test address can create confusion.

What should I check when buying a cheap .dev?

Include hosting and HTTPS needs alongside registration and renewal. A selected premium name may have an annual fee above the standard rate.

Can I redirect .dev to another website?

Yes, but the .dev address performing the redirect must be reachable over HTTPS. An HTTP-only redirect is insufficient because of HSTS.

Can I use .dev for email?

Yes. DomainQ includes free Premium Anycast DNS with .dev registration, so you can manage your email service’s MX and verification records in your panel. Mailboxes require a separate email service. HSTS applies to web-browser connections.

Does .dev increase Google rankings?

Operation by Google Registry does not provide a ranking privilege. Useful content and technically accessible pages are still needed.

Can a .dev name contain Turkish characters?

IDN language tables and provider support determine eligibility. Check the name rather than assuming every Unicode character is accepted.

Does a .dev transfer move my site too?

Transferring your domain to DomainQ does not automatically move website files or your application. Plan existing DNS settings, hosting connections and the HTTPS certificate separately. Ask our team about transfer eligibility and authorisation steps. Check that certificate renewal continues as well.
