What is .ca and when is it useful?

.ca is Canada’s country-code extension. It can support a store, organisation or personal project for Canadian users, provided the applicant qualifies under Canadian Presence Requirements. Selling to Canada is not the same as meeting an eligible legal category. If you meet one of the CPR categories, search your .ca address for Canada at DomainQ.

In yourbrand.ca, yourbrand is your chosen name and .ca is the top-level domain. DNS hierarchy proceeds from the root (.) to the extension and the name. This is an illustrative address, not an availability result.

.ca registry operator: CIRA

Your .ca application at DomainQ follows eligibility and naming rules set by CIRA. Review the registration, renewal and transfer steps for your domain with our team; the sources for these conditions are linked below.

When to use .ca

A Canadian-market store

Explain Canadian-dollar pricing, delivery regions and returns clearly. If you also have a US store, preserve Canadian shipping and product differences.

English and French content

Consider how the brand reads and is searched in both languages. .ca can retain a national identity while language paths provide proper translations and local support.

A personal project with Canadian ties

Individuals in an eligible citizenship or permanent-residence category can apply. Do not confuse personal eligibility with the eligibility of a foreign employer.

How to choose a .ca domain

Identify your qualifying CPR category first, then search English and French name options at DomainQ, considering accented variants and trademark rights together.

A genuine CPR basis

A temporary Canadian address or trustee service does not itself establish eligibility. Identify the category genuinely matching the individual or organisation and prepare possible supporting evidence.

Scope of a registered trademark

Under the foreign-trademark-owner route, the domain must contain the exact word component of the registered mark. Do not rely on this category without a Canadian trademark registration.

Accented and unaccented variants

Learn how variant bundling works for an accented French brand. A reserved spelling is not automatically activated for free or supported by an email service.

Register and manage .ca at DomainQ

Select your CPR category accurately when applying for .ca at DomainQ, and follow the registration agreement and verification notices. Ask our team about renewal or deletion timing and track the expiry date in your panel.

IDNs and variant bundles

Accented and unaccented variants can be bundled for the same holder; reservation is not active registration. AWS describes IDN support while OpenSRS says its service does not offer it, so confirm registration support for your chosen name with the DomainQ team.

Check the provider’s timeline

Before registering at DomainQ

Agreement acceptance

Review the CIRA registrant agreement and complete required acceptance in time. A provider’s order confirmation may not mean all registry verification steps are complete.

Evidence and contact details

CIRA may ask for eligibility evidence. Use your actual name, entity identity and reachable email; ignoring verification requests can lead to suspension or deletion.

Renewal dates and IDN bundles

Track renewal for each active registration and related bundle names during transfer. Do not treat another provider’s recovery period as guaranteed extra time for your own account.

Technical terms and transaction details

Can I register .ca from Türkiye?

The application location is not decisive; an accepted CPR category is required. Selling to Canadian customers alone is insufficient without a qualifying basis such as Canadian citizenship or an eligible Canadian trademark registration.

Is a Canadian postal address sufficient?

No. CPR depends on legal categories. OpenSRS’s CIRA guide also notes that trustee services cannot substitute for eligibility; the actual applicant must qualify.

Questions about .ca at DomainQ

From choosing .ca to registration and renewal: answers about your DomainQ service and the extension’s requirements.

Can a foreign business qualify through a Canadian trademark?

CPR provides a limited route for the owner of a trademark registered in Canada. The domain must consist of or include the mark’s exact word component; a pending application is not a registration.

Can .ca use French accents?

.ca supports IDNs and accented variants, but provider support can differ. Variants may be reserved for the same registrant, while each active name requires a registration request.

Does every .ca provider offer the same recovery window?

No. OpenSRS and AWS, for example, publish different late-renewal schedules; do not automatically apply another provider’s calendar to your DomainQ registration. Confirm your domain’s renewal, deletion and restoration deadlines through your panel and our team.

How much does a .ca domain cost?

The table above lists DomainQ’s standard .ca registration, renewal and transfer charges separately. Paying for a request does not remove the eligibility requirements. Check the final order total, selected period, taxes and any additional services before completing registration.

What should I check when choosing a cheap .ca domain?

Assess CPR eligibility, renewal charges and separate accented-variant registrations alongside the initial price. A low quote does not remove eligibility conditions or restoration costs.

What does .ca mean for SEO?

.ca can signal Canada, but does not automatically improve rankings in every English- or French-language search. Canadian content and correct relationships between language versions remain necessary.

Does my .ca address include a website and email?

Your .ca registration at DomainQ includes free Premium Anycast DNS and a 15-day free AI SiteQ website-builder trial. Hosting and mailboxes are separate services; connect your .ca to both using DNS records. When changing provider, plan DNS, website files and mailbox migration separately.

Does registering .ca create trademark rights?

No. Domain availability is not permission to use another person’s or organisation’s trademark. Research similar names in the target market; the registry’s dispute rules also apply.
