What is .it and when is it useful?

.it is Italy’s country-code extension. It can suit businesses offering Italian sales and support, tourism projects and local brand websites. Registro .it eligibility rules still apply when the extension is chosen for wordplay. If you meet Registro .it’s conditions, start a registration for your Italian project at DomainQ.

In yourbrand.it, yourbrand is your chosen name and .it is the top-level domain. DNS hierarchy proceeds from the root (.) to the extension and the name. This is an illustrative address, not an availability result.

.it registry operator: Registro .it / IIT-CNR

Your .it application at DomainQ follows eligibility and naming rules set by Registro .it / IIT-CNR. Review the registration, renewal and transfer steps for your domain with our team; the sources for these conditions are linked below.

Registry operator
Registro .it / IIT-CNR

IANA lists IIT - CNR as the .it manager; its public registry service is Registro .it.

Country-code top-level domain (ccTLD)

The country code for Italy. Its resemblance to the abbreviation for information technology does not change eligibility.

Registro .it describes annual registration maintenance. A registrar change can affect the expiry date, so verify it after the transaction.

When to use .it

An Italian-language store

Adapt product names, sizing, delivery and returns information for Italian buyers. A short .it retaining your brand can distinguish the local store from your international site.

Tourism and reservations

Consider the scope of a city name when naming a hotel or experience website. Real location details, season information and booking terms should support the local expectation created by the extension.

Software names and wordplay

Completing an English phrase with .it can be memorable, but still requires eligibility and pronunciation checks. Consider whether customers may mistakenly remember a .com address.

How to choose a .it domain

Look for names with clear Italian pronunciation at DomainQ, assessing them against length rules and registrant eligibility.

Identify the eligible holder first

Selling to Italy from a Turkish company does not automatically establish eligibility. Verify the citizenship, residence or registered-office basis reflected in the application.

At least three characters

Do not assume a two-letter brand abbreviation can be registered directly under .it. Add a meaningful brand word and distinguish reserved names from ordinary registrations.

Accented and unaccented spelling

Check character support for an accented Italian name. Consider an ASCII alternative for email and different keyboards; each spelling can be a separate address.

Register and manage .it at DomainQ

Apply for .it at DomainQ with the correct identity and registration data required by Registro .it for your individual or organisation type. Ask our team about eligibility and manage DNS and renewal preferences in your panel after registration.

Naming and management rules

Standard length
3–63

An ASCII name requires at least three characters and cannot begin or end with a hyphen.

IDN support
Subject to the supported character set

Registro .it accepts non-ASCII characters in its technical guideline’s character set. The xn-- prefix is reserved for IDN encoding.

Some names are not freely registrable

Local-government names and the predefined geographic structure have special rules. Not every short or geographic name is an ordinary registration.

Before registering at DomainQ

Applicant type and data

Individuals, companies and sole traders may require different data fields. Confirm the tax or organisation details needed by the provider and use the actual applicant’s information.

Authinfo and expiry date

Obtain Authinfo securely before transfer. Afterwards, verify ownership, DNS and the new expiry date; billing periods may differ between providers.

Geographic names and rights

Review the reserved structure for municipalities, regions and public bodies. An availability result does not legitimise using a name belonging to a local authority.

How to register a domain with DomainQ

From choosing your name to managing DNS, keep your domain in one customer panel.

  1. Search for your name at DomainQ

Check your address for availability and compare alternative extension prices. Searching alone does not reserve the name.

  2. Complete registration in our panel

Review your registrant details, registration term and total price in your DomainQ customer panel. Keep your contact details current for renewal notifications.

  3. Connect with your included DNS

Manage web and email records with our included Premium Anycast DNS. If you are still building your site, try SiteQ free for 15 days; our team can help with setup questions.

Technical terms and transaction details

Is .it limited to Italians?

No. Registro .it also accepts qualifying connections to the EEA, Vatican City, San Marino, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Citizenship, residence and registered-office criteria depend on applicant type.

Is Authinfo a hosting password?

No. It authorises domain transactions. Store it separately from website and email passwords.

Questions about .it at DomainQ

From choosing .it to registration and renewal: answers about your DomainQ service and the extension’s requirements.

Can I apply for .it from Türkiye?

Being in Türkiye alone is insufficient. The adult individual or organisation must meet an accepted citizenship, residence or registered-office criterion. Applying from Türkiye does not prevent eligibility through another valid qualifying connection.

Is the United Kingdom still eligible for .it?

Registro .it’s current registration guide explicitly includes the United Kingdom. Do not automatically apply rules from .eu or .fr to .it.

Can I register a two-letter .it?

The published minimum for standard .it names is three characters. Choose a longer, meaningful alternative for a two-letter brand abbreviation.

What is needed to change .it provider?

A .it transfer to DomainQ requires the AuthInfo code from the current provider and an eligible domain status. Check registrant details and ask our team about the steps. Plan hosting and email connections separately. After completion, recheck DNS records and the registration expiry date.

Is .it purchased permanently?

No. Registro .it describes annual registration maintenance. Follow your provider’s renewal and cancellation agreement; a year of use does not mean the following year has already been paid for.

How much does a .it domain cost?

The table above lists DomainQ’s standard .it registration, renewal and transfer charges separately. Paying for a request does not remove the eligibility requirements. Check the final order total, selected period, taxes and any additional services before completing registration.

What should I check when choosing a cheap .it domain?

Check annual renewal charges and how the registration period is calculated after a provider change. A low price is of little value if the applicant cannot meet the eligibility conditions.

What does .it mean for SEO?

.it is a country signal for Italy; the English abbreviation “IT” does not give technology websites an automatic ranking advantage. Italian, market-appropriate content, good site structure and relevant hreflang links still matter.

Does my .it address include a website and email?

Your .it registration at DomainQ includes free Premium Anycast DNS and a 15-day free AI SiteQ website-builder trial. Hosting and mailboxes are separate services; connect your .it to both using DNS records. When changing provider, plan DNS, website files and mailbox migration separately.

Does registering .it create trademark rights?

No. Registro .it eligibility and availability checks are not trademark registration. Check Italian brands, trade names and reserved geographic names; Registro .it provides dispute and reassignment procedures.
